Corporeal Nourishing (2016)Originally 3mins, 39s, continuously looped.Cotton, wig, looped video, laptop, table, chair, plastic sheeting, Vaseline. Exploring the hypocritical attitude towards the depiction of religious ecstasy in female religious figures by male artists and writers, in this case by directly referencing Caravaggio's Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy (1606), and the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine (c. 1260). Arguably, it is more a sexual ecstasy that’s depicted, thus this Mary takes on the absurd persona of some kind of trapped, bored ‘live cam’ girl, as reflected by the flaking webcam aesthetic and relentless loop of the video. The installation furthers this sense; the video is viewed on a laptop by one person at a time, and all surfaces are covered in a viscous layer of yellowing vaseline, which results in an intense, humorous, and disconcerting viewing experience. (exhibited in ‘Autonomous Object’, Glasgow School of Art, March 2015).
